Headteacher performance management
Maintained schools must appraise the performance of their headteacher on an annual basis. The review should take place on or before 31 December each year.
Usually, a sub-committee of 2 or 3 governors completes a performance review and target setting. In maintained schools, the governing board must appoint an external adviser to support the performance management process.
The Council provides support for headteacher performance management. This is a traded service available to all schools, including academies. Find out more on the Services 2 Schools webshop.
Academies have no statutory duty to carry out headteacher appraisals. Trusts often appoint an external adviser and follow the same procedures as maintained schools.
