Children’s Disability Service (CDS)

The Children’s Disability Service helps children with severe learning disabilities. We assess children up to age 16, and their families, for social care support.

We’ll do a family assessment if a child:

has a severe learning disability
is on level 4 of the Continuum of Need; and
other services are not appropriate or have not been effective

We normally decide within 24 hours if we’ll do an assessment.

What we offer

The Children’s Disability Service can offer:

information and advice
referrals to other agencies; or
a family assessment

If we identify a social care need which family networks or other professional networks cannot meet, we may develop a support plan. This will consider how to meet the need.
