Unique Pupil Numbers
1. What is a Unique Pupil Number?
All pupils attending a maintained school should have a Unique Pupil Number (UPN). If a pupil is entering a maintained school for the first time, your school should issue a new permanent UPN using the management information system. In East Sussex this is SIMS (School Information Management System). UPNs are always 13 digits and begin with a letter. For more detailed information about UPNs, you can download the DfE guidance document
Please note that UPNs should be treated as confidential personal information and come under the remit of the Data Protection Act..
