Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC)

The CRC is a national mandatory carbon emissions reporting and pricing scheme. It aims to provide a financial incentive to reduce energy use.

Originally the scheme included large public and private sector organisations in the UK that used more than 6,000MWh per year of electricity and had at least one half-hourly meter settled on the half-hourly electricity market.CRC is being run in a number of phases.

The scheme came into force for both East Sussex County Council and all schools in April 2010. Each April East Sussex County Council bought carbon credits based on how much energy we used.

From April 2013 state funded schools in England were no longer included under this mandatory reporting scheme.

Phase 2 of the CRC runs from April 2014-April 2019. East Sussex County Council is not required to participate in Phase 2 of the scheme.

In October 2015, HM Treasury announced a review of the Carbon Reduction Scheme and the consultation response on the future of CRC was published in March 2016.
